GTRI’s Cooperative Education (“co-op”) program offers you extensive opportunities to participate in diverse scientific and technological endeavors, use state-of-the-art equipment and rapidly improve your technical and leadership skills. The program allows you to alternate three semesters of full-time work at GTRI with semesters of full-time school.
The Electro-Optical Systems Laboratory (EOSL) seeks Opto-Electrical co-ops to work in a multi-disciplinary team of engineers to solve challenging optical remote sensing problems. Individual will be responsible for actively participating with the team in the design, fabrication, and analysis of electro-optical systems. Individual will work closely with:
• Algorithms and signal processing
• Embedded systems
• Cameras and other electro-optical detectors
• Low-level through high-level programming
Required Minimum Qualifications
- Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Imaging Science or related field
- 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA
- Must be eligible to be approved by your college/university to participate in a co-op program and register for co-op credit with your university during work terms
- Must be able to complete at least three full-time co-op terms (alternating three terms of full-time work at GTRI with semesters of full-time school) prior to graduation
- Strong math skills and ability to learn complex engineering concepts
- Ability to clearly communicate technical ideas
- Computational tools such as Matlab, Python, Octave, and/or IDL
- Programming languages such as C/C++, C#, Visual Studio, VHDL, Verilog, CUDA
- Toolboxes such as CUDA, OpenGL, and Open CV
- Software design fundamentals
- Exposure to machine learning concepts, image processing
- Software version control
- Outside coursework engineering experience – home tinker-er, undergraduate research, internships, extracurriculars, etc.
- Optical system experience – LIDAR, point cloud processing
- Laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and/or data acquisition hardware/software

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.
