Job Description

The Mechanical Design Engineer will perform engineering design and analysis in support of multiple sponsored research programs.  Custom, fully-functional, fully-integrated system hardware and full documentation are the principal deliverables for these programs, which include radar systems, state-of-the-art electronics, and advanced systems for ground-based, naval, airborne, and space applications.

Job Duties

  • Generate design concepts and preliminary designs, cost estimates, 3D CAD models, structural and thermal analysis, specifications, final detailed designs, and fabrication drawings;
  • Purchase materials and components;
  • Coordinate fabrication, assembly, installation, and integration;
  • Set up and conduct experiments;
  • Prepare progress reports, O&M manuals, and design review presentations;
  • Develop white papers and project proposals

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer II

  • A Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field of study and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field of study and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field of study.

Senior Research Engineer

  • A Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field of study and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field of study and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field of study and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • 5+ years broad-based mechanical engineering design and analysis experience across several disciplines: machine design, structures, kinematics, vibration, thermal systems, fluid flow, hydraulics, pneumatics, electronics packaging, servo controls
  • Good working knowledge of material properties and machine shop fabrication processes is required
  • Must be proficient with 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred). FEA experience required
  • Experience working with military vehicles and aircraft preferred

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Ability to obtain Secret Clearance upon hire
