Job Description

The Human Systems Research Engineer / Scientist in the Human Systems Engineering Branch (HSEB) focuses on the research, development, and application of human systems engineering (HSE) tools and methods to the design, development, and evaluation of complex systems. This position applies advanced HSE methods and methodology to address complex challenges within the Department of Defense.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE

  • Conduct research on situation awareness, decision making, and performance
  • Design and evaluate hardware and software systems
  • Develop conceptual and computational models of human behavior and human performance at the individual, team, and societal levels
  • Identify criteria related to personnel, workforce and training issues associated with complex systems
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist II

  • A Bachelor's degree and Master's degree with one or both in Human Factors, Industrial Engineering, Engineering Psychology, Psychology, Human-Computer Interaction, or related technical field and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Bachelor's degree and Master's degree with one or both in Human Factors, Industrial Engineering, Engineering Psychology, Psychology, Human-Computer Interaction, or related technical field and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree, or

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist

  • A Bachelor's degree and Master's degree with one or both in Human Factors, Industrial Engineering, Engineering Psychology, Psychology, Human-Computer Interaction, or related technical field and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Bachelor's degree and Master's degree with one or both in Human Factors, Industrial Engineering, Engineering Psychology, Psychology, Human-Computer Interaction, or related technical field and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree, or

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience applying HSE methods to complex systems
  • Experience with user-centered design
  • Experience conducting and documenting cognitive task analyses and/or function analyses
  • Candidates currently enrolled in an accredited Master's degree with a graduation date of December 2020 and skills relevant to this position will be considered

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in a field related to Human Systems Engineering (e.g., Industrial Engineering, Psychology, Human Factors, Human-Computer Interaction, etc.)
  • Experience with conceptual design and detailed design of user interfaces to support human performance
  • Experience assessing workload, situation awareness, usability, human performance, and user acceptance
  • Experience with experimental design and statistics (basic descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, structural equation modeling)
  • Experience with Human Systems Integration (HSI), and it's role in the government acquisition process
  • Experience applying HSE to military systems
  • Experience interacting with stakeholders and leading working groups

Due to our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position are required to be U.S. Citizens.
