This opportunity is with our Sensors and Electromagnetic Applications Laboratory (SEAL). SEAL projects focus on developing research and development (R&D) hardware for a wide range of Department of Defense applications which primarily include radar, electronic warfare, and embedded signal processing but often span into communication systems, surveillance systems, and other remote sensing applications. SEAL is seeking a highly-motivated RF PCB layout engineer whose responsibilities will include the design, schematic capture, layout, and test of highly complex, integrated PCBs. The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of PCB design including RF layout, mixed-signal design, power supplies, and embedded systems including PIC32, FPGAs, and microcontrollers. Additionally, the candidate should have a comprehensive understanding of current PCB manufacturing capabilities and limitations. The engineer will work in a diverse, team environment so strong communication and leadership skills are a must.

Job Duties

  • Capture schematics and design PCB layouts using Altium
  • Document PCB fabrication, assembly packages, schematics, and footprints
  • RF engineering to include impedance controlled lines, impedance matching, RF components, and stitching
  • Design embedded systems for PIC32 (PIC32 is a chip architecture), FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Arrays), and microcontrollers
  • Design power supplies
  • Perform RF modeling and simulation
  • Perform RF modeling and simulation
  • Design packaging and thermal management

Travel Requirements

10% - 25% travel

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist II

  • A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related field of study and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related field of study and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related field of study.

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist

  • A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related field of study and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related field of study and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related field of study and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidates currently enrolled in an accredited Master's or Doctoral degree program relevant to this position will be considered
  • At least 5 years of relevant full-time work experience (this can include internships) related to PCB design or similar PCB-centric subject
  • The successful candidate will have interest in how their PCBs fit into the larger system as a whole. Therefore, the successful candidate will be comfortable interfacing with engineers in other disciplines and have an interest in related fields such as firmware/software development, embedded systems, mechanical and thermal engineering, signal processing, antenna design, and/or system engineering.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MS degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related field of study
  • At least 10 years of full-time work experience with PCB design
  • Experience with RF system design and architecture, RF modeling and simulation, RF testing, or similar RF-centric subject
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills
  • Experience and proficiency with leading small teams
  • Hobbies or extracurricular activities that contribute to the applicant's technical ability

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.
