Job Description

The Hardware Open Systems Development Lead will lead the development of modular open architecture standards and systems based on those standards. The position will combine experience developing electronic systems and equipment to lead engineering project teams. This position is in the Applied Embedded Systems (AES) division of the Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) at GTRI. AES is predominantly focused on the research, development, testing, and deployment of embedded electronic and electromechanical systems. These systems provide our sponsors with technological solutions in the fields of Electronic Warfare (EW), command and control, communications, avionics, entertainment, physiological monitoring, and other applications.

Job Duties

  • Provide technical leadership in the development of hardware and systems based on modular open architecture standards
  • Lead technical project teams working in the area of modular open standards
  • Collaborate with sponsors and project teams to ensure project deliverables and requirements are met
  • Track project team performance against sponsor expectations
  • Develop technical papers for conferences and develop/present briefings to potential sponsors
  • Support Department of Defense (DoD) and industry sponsors in their decision making regarding the use of modular open standards
  • Mentor junior team members
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate II

  • A Bachelor's and Master's degree with one or both in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Systems Engineer, or related technical field and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Bachelor's and Master's degree with one or both in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Systems Engineer, or related technical field and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree and Master's degree with one or both in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Systems Engineer, or related technical field.

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate

  • A Bachelor's and Master's degree with one or both in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Systems Engineer, or related technical field and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Bachelor's and Master's degree with one or both in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Systems Engineer, or related technical field and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree and Master's degree with one or both in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Systems Engineer, or related technical field and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience leading engineering teams
  • Experience developing and/or integrating electronics systems for use in DoD applications
  • Experience with requirements development for complex systems

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with avionics hardware or open systems based electronics used in DOD systems
  • Experience with modular open standards such as SOSA, HOST, CMOSS, OpenVPX, FOCIS, etc.
  • Experience with Model-Based System Engineering (MBSE) and/or development processes for high-reliability software for DOD systems
  • Experience interfacing directly with DoD customers
  • Experience with budget and schedule responsibilities for technical task

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
