Job Description

The Systems Architect will lead the development of cutting-edge, complex electronic systems that often define our sponsors' next-generation capabilities. The position will combine experience developing and designing electronic systems with a proven ability to lead multi-disciplinary engineering project teams. This position is in the Applied Embedded Systems (AES) division of the Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) at GTRI. AES is predominantly focused on the research, development, testing, and deployment of embedded electronic and electromechanical systems. These systems provide our sponsors with technological solutions in the fields of Electronic Warfare (EW), command and control, communications, avionics, entertainment, physiological monitoring, and other applications.

Job Duties

  • Develop system architectures and requirements and translate them into clear engineering/design artifacts
  • Build system solutions based on requirements and required integrations with novel/existing applications, systems, and/or platforms
  • Identify, select, and test candidate technologies, approaches, and architectures to ensure robust solutions
  • Serve as a technical expert on assigned projects and systems to include keeping up-to-date on industry standards and road maps for current and future technology updates
  • Collaborate with sponsors and project teams to ensure project deliverables and requirements are met
  • Develop technical papers for conferences and develop/present briefings to potential sponsors
  • Mentor junior engineers and team members
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist II

  • A Bachelors and Masters Degree with one or both in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or other Engineering or Science related disciplines. and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Bachelors and Masters Degree with one or both in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or other Engineering or Science related disciplines and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree and Masters Degree with one or both in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or other Engineering or Science related disciplines.-.

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist

  • A Bachelors and Masters Degree with one or both in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or other Engineering or Science related disciplines. and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Bachelors and Masters Degree with one or both in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or other Engineering or Science related disciplines. and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree and Masters Degree with one or both in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or other Engineering or Science related disciplines. and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience developing robust system architectures
  • Experience developing and/or integrating electronics systems
  • Experience with requirements development and traceability through all system development phases
  • Experience leading engineering tasks and/or teams
  • 5+ years of applicable experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with avionics or other electronic systems used in Department of Defense (DOD) systems
  • Experience facilitating dialogue, collaboration, and partnerships among research personnel, government, and industry stakeholders
  • Experience as a systems architect on production/fielded systems

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
