Job Description

The Opto-Electrical (OE) Branch in the Electro-Optical Systems Innovation Division (EOSID) supports the design, modeling, simulation, construction, and integration of high precision optical systems by applying core competencies in electrical design, electronics, embedded hardware/firmware/software, and electromechanical control systems. The OE branch is made up of 14 full-time researchers with backgrounds in optical, electrical, and computer engineering. The Branch Head of the OE Branch is tasked with oversight of the branch's programs and researchers.
EOSID specializes in the complete imaging and remote sensing chain, from the analysis, design, development, integration, test and evaluation of sensing systems, to the processing, exploitation, and visualization of data and imagery. EOSID also specializes in modeling and simulation (M&S) of high energy laser propagation, engagements, and effects.

Job Duties

• Oversee and manage branch budgets, resources and compliance with institute policies and procedures
• Oversee and manage sponsored research in the branch to ensure execution of successful research programs based on sponsor requirements
• Support branch operations and coordination across branches within the division and other laboratories of GTRI
• Establish, maintain and evolve the strategic vision and execution plan for the branch to enhance sponsored project portfolios and technical capabilities
• Train and mentor branch members including research faculty and both undergraduate and graduate students, to develop expertise in electro-optical applications including facilitating publication of novel research activities, professional development and training opportunities
• Direct business development activities to include: sponsor engagement, showcasing branch capabilities to internal and external organizations, support sponsor tours, visits and technical meetings
• Oversee, author, and contribute to proposals and white papers for sustained branch growth
• Conduct administrative actions including the recruitment, hiring and termination of branch personnel, execution of performance appraisals, development and execution of performance improvement plans and review and approval of employee time sheets
• Represent the division and laboratory as a subject matter expert at consortium's, symposiums, and expositions
• Ensure that all technical work is performed and documented to organizational and sponsor standards based on project requirements.
• Perform other duties as assigned

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist II

  • A Master’s degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or a related field. PhD's and PhD candidates will be considered and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or a related field. PhD's and PhD candidates will be considered and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or a related field. PhD's and PhD candidates will be considered.

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist

  • A Master’s degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or a related field. PhD's and PhD candidates will be considered and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or a related field. PhD's and PhD candidates will be considered and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or a related field. PhD's and PhD candidates will be considered and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • 5+ years of relevant work experience
  • Experience in program development and leadership of sponsored research projects
  • Experience in the design, development, and integration of electro-optical sensor systems

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience capturing, managing, and executing large sponsored programs involving the development of prototype systems
  • Experience in personnel management

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
