The Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) in Atlanta, GA is looking for radar engineers and scientists with interest in assessing the performance of domestic and foreign radar systems and developing unique RF radar hardware prototyping across multiple frequency bands from VHF to Ka-band. The radar assessment requires system-level knowledge of radar with a focus on the RF subsystems of the radar, including antennas, transmitters, exciters, and receivers. This opportunity is with the Aerospace, Transportation, and Advanced Systems Laboratory (ATAS) with the Systems Development Division (SDD). ATAS/SDD projects focus on developing RF hardware systems for a wide range of Department of Defense applications which primarily include radar; threat system simulations; test and evaluation related to threat radars, missiles, air, and ground vehicles; power systems; and embedded computing and control systems but often span into electronic warfare, high power microwave (HPM) systems, and weapon systems. - Develop skills in radar hardware with an emphasis on radar system architecture/design and RF circuits/components
- Performing assessments of domestic and foreign radar design and technology
- Developing unique radar hardware with a focus on front-end RF hardware, such as
- Analyzing and designing radar system architectures
- Designing radar and RF microwave transmit and/or receive systems to meet requirements
- Prototyping systems to determine design feasibility
- Integrating COTS and custom-designed radar hardware into a large scale system
- Conducting individual radar and RF component tests and system-level testing in a lab and on installed systems to verify specification compliance and system performance
- Maintaining and/or modifying radar/RF system components and associated equipment
- Performing radar hardware test and integration
- Analyzing radar operational performance with the identification of limitations
- Assessing the performance of high-power microwave systems (HPM) against radar systems, and
- Analyzing the effectiveness of EA/EP techniques related to radar systems
Education & Length of Experience
Research Engineer/Scientist I
- A Bachelor's degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field of study.
Research Engineer/Scientist II
- A Master’s degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field of study and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
- A Master’s degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field of study and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
- A Doctoral degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field of study.
Required Minimum Qualifications
- Candidates currently enrolled in an accredited Bachelor’s degree program relevant to this position will be considered
- 0-5 years of relevant experience with radar, RF, and digital hardware concepts
The ideal candidate will have an interest or relevant experience in some combination of:
- Experience with implementing radar, RF, and digital hardware concepts in physical systems
- Strong math skills and ability to learn complex engineering concepts
- Ability to clearly communicate technical ideas to a non-technical audience
- Experience/interest in managing research projects, willingness to take on technical leadership roles, giving technical presentations of research project results, and writing reports is a plus.
Radar System Engineering and Analysis
- Performance assessment of domestic and foreign radar design and technology
- Radar operational performance analysis with the identification of limitations
- Requirements development for building, testing, and operating radar systems, and
- EA/EP techniques effectiveness analysis related to radar systems.
RF Hardware Development
- Radar hardware development with a focus on front-end RF hardware (including antennas, transmitters, exciters, and receivers)
- High-power amplifiers (including TWTs and solid-state transmitters) for HPM assessments against radar systems
- RF hardware test and integration (including radar system-level measurements)
- Modeling and simulation experience with MATLAB
- Electromagnetic theory (knowledge of electromagnetic computational codes like CST Microwave Studio, HFSS, and FEKO a plus)
