Project/Unit Description

The Signals and Systems Division of the Advanced Concepts Laboratory (ACL) is currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Signal Processing Engineer within the Systems Modeling and Simulation Branch. The Signals and Systems Division engages in research related to high-impact, technical analysis for U.S. Government projects. The division's mission is to shape the development of next-generation technical capabilities and strengthen our national defense through leading-edge research and analytic support, informed by a deep knowledge of operational capabilities, current intelligence, and the related information environment. The Systems Modeling and Simulation Branch provides first-principle subject matter expertise needed for modeling and simulation of next-generation concepts.

The Advanced Concepts Laboratory develops tailored solutions for a broad range of national security challenges through disciplined application of physics- and effects-based modeling to realizable systems, augmented with prototype development and testing. ACL’s research thrusts extend across domains, and include bio-, chemical-, RF-, and optical-sensor physics; materials science and engineering; electromagnetic theory, computation, structures, and measurements; electronic warfare techniques and applications; operational scenario modeling and simulation; traditional and asymmetric threat analysis; and ground maneuver warfare.

Job Purpose

Develops and/or applies mathematical, statistical, computational, or modeling techniques to generate algorithms for the processing of analog or digital signals, which may be performed in hardware, firmware, or software systems. Development includes implementation of time and frequency signal algorithms, communications and spectrum sensing algorithms, image processing algorithms and/or the application of sensing and perception algorithms in computer vision, lidar, or other sensor processing modalities. Utilizes complex engineering and mathematical principles to compose algorithm structures for problem solutions including the application of filtering and data fusion methods.  Applies algorithms to application specific hardware by writing code in assembly language or in a higher level software environment and integrates or interfaces with additional systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform signal processing tasks with more limited direction from supervisor
  • Develop expertise in specific areas
  • Contribute to white papers and proposals with supporting background or data analysis
  • Contribute to technical reports/presentations of projects, journal articles, and conference presentations

Additional Responsibilities

  • Develop detection and tracking algorithms and associated metrics relevant to radio-frequency (RF) sensors, systems and threats.
  • Investigate waveforms and techniques that perform various types of electronic warfare (EW) to allow unimpeded access to the electromagnetic spectrum.
  • Create and execute simulations and optimizations to test algorithmic effectiveness against simulated threats scenarios.
  • Develop methods and algorithms to fuse data from multiple sensors and/or platforms in support of algorithm development.
  • Interface effectively with team members to perform trade studies to determine preferred technical approach.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • BS, MS or Ph.D. in Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Communications Engineering or related discipline.
  • Strong mathematics and modeling and simulation background.
  • Holds a basic understanding of processing methods for RF signals.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to convey highly technical material in a clear, concise manner to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Programming experience with MATLAB, Python, or C++.
  • Able to obtain and maintain a DoD Top Secret Security Clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active TS/SCI Clearance
  • MS or Ph.D. in Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Communications Engineering or related discipline.
  • Experience modeling RF sensor and processing their signals.
  • Experience with EW algorithms.
  • Experience with numerical optimization techniques include AI/ML.
