Project/Unit Description

The Applied Systems Laboratory (ASL) Systems Integration Division (SID) supports systems integration, system design, and product development projects for the Department of Defense (DoD) manned and unmanned systems. SID research military systems specializing in avionics, electronic warfare, autonomous systems, intelligence systems, and tactical communication/datalink systems. The SID team's engineering roles include Systems Engineering, Algorithm Engineering, Datalink Engineering, and Embedded Software Engineering.

Job Purpose

The Avionics Engineer defines and designs military avionic systems and systems-of-systems. Specifically, the Avionics Engineer designs hardware and software systems to perform functions such as navigation, communication, tactical data links, electronic warfare, and defensive countermeasures. These design efforts include integrating the avionics systems within the aircraft, aircraft-to-aircraft, and aircraft-to-ground system integration. The Avionics Engineer applies knowledge specific to aircraft such as safety (e.g. FAA standards), security, robustness, and performance. Additionally, the Avionics Engineer analyzes laboratory and flight test data for functionality and performance. The Avionics Engineer also provides expertise and technical leadership to programs and sponsors to achieve overall goals through the full development life cycle (i.e., requirements development to final delivery). Tools and methodologies used by the Avionics Engineer includes Model Based System Engineering, laboratory analysis hardware, software development environments, and Agile methodologies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage all technical aspects of product or system design including directing multiple lab resources for large scale product or system deployments.
  • Manage sub-contractor resources supporting all system engineering areas (e.g., definition, requirements analysis, synthesis, systems analysis, and implementation).
  • Conduct product or system design synthesis, translating requirements into physical architectures for systems of high complexity.
  • Define/refine internal and external system interfaces.
  • Support development of product strategy and execution.
  • Develop and review technical reports, specifications, test plans, memos, and diagrams detailing product or system attributes.
  • Lead medium-to-large project tasks and/or small programs and provide technical status and plans to Project Director.
  • Serve as a resource and Subject Matter Expert (SME) for avionics engineering tools and technologies.
  • Significantly contribute to whitepapers and proposals.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience developing/designing complex, software-intensive, military unmanned air systems (UAS) using system engineering processes and methodologies.
  • Knowledge of the operational use models of military UAS.
  • Experience integrating multiple subsystems, and/or integrate multiple software applications and hardware composing UAS.
  • Experience with Modular Open System Approach (MOSA).
  • Experience integrating and troubleshooting systems to determine functional correctness, completeness, and/or effectiveness.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active Secret Clearance.
  • 7+ years of engineering military systems experience.
  • Experience with autonomy algorithms.
  • Experience technically leading multi-disciplined (e.g. System Engineers, Software Engineers, Test Engineers) project teams.
  • Experience developing system design for Electronic Warfare and/or Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) systems.
  • Experience processing and analyzing data with tools such as Python or R.
  • Experience with avionic data buses (e.g. MIL-STD-1553, ARINC 429, Ethernet, RS-422, etc.), tactical data links (e.g. Link-16, CDL),
military radios, and open systems architecture frameworks (e.g. FACE™, Victory).
  • Experience using Model Based System Engineering (SysML) to design systems (e.g. use cases, behavior, interfaces, data models);
Additional DoDAF experience is a plus.
  • Experience working in a full-lifecycle agile and/or digital engineering environment.
  • Experience supporting field tests to troubleshoot and solve problems.
  • Experience designing secure and safe system solutions.

Travel Requirements

  • 10% - 25% travel.
