Project/Unit Description

A full-time, permanent position as a forward thinking Product Strategist leader is available in the Software Engineering and Analytics Division (SEAD) of the Information and Communications Laboratory (ICL) in the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI). The main focus of SEAD is sustainable software systems engineering, novel and complex algorithm development, human-centered research, and population decision-making. SEAD is a people-first and people-growth focused division. The ICL lab has programs across a wide range of information science research, including communications, sensing, networks, advanced computing, trusted information exchange, enterprise modernization, software applications, data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and health systems. The goal of SEAD is to grow a forward-looking capability in the data management life cycle that brings innovative cross disciplinary methods and techniques to the laboratory’s diverse information science portfolio. Some technical and domain areas that SEAD focuses on include: social service software systems, data management, global health, population or public health, data readiness, data or information visualization, statistics, applied math, analytics for social science, scalable DB design and search.

Job Purpose

Product Strategist create long-term visions for product lines and technologies. This is based on in-depth stakeholder and market research and a deep understanding of the breadth of technologies. They analyze product performance and adjust product designs accordingly. At the higher levels, a strategist oversees product managers across multiple product lines for an organization. This can be internal to GTRI or across multiple sponsor organizations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the development of stakeholder engagement/customer discovery instrument (e.g. surveys and interview guides) development.
  • Conduct stakeholder engagement/customer discovery
  • Analyze customer insight and market and technology research to develop a product vision
  • Work with product designers to design the product
  • Work with a cross-functional team to create a realistic and value-driven product roadmap
  • Designate roles to their team by thinking critically about the work dynamic, strengths and weaknesses of all their employees
  • Staying on top of trends to determine market openings for new products
  • Report the progress of a product to senior staff and/or upper-level management.
  • Foster a positive team culture
  • Write selling points and design strategies to sell their product
  • Work with a Product Strategist to ensure that the product vision and roadmap aligns with the larger product strategy.
  • Work with a Senior Product Manager to ensure that the product roadmap aligns with a larger suite of product roadmaps.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Through user-centered research, identify user needs, goals, tasks, and workflows. This can include gaining a thorough understanding of customer’s legacy systems, standard operating procedures, and information needs to meet enterprise objectives and regulatory requirements
  • Create consumable client-ready work products that package analysis, recommendations, and actionable next steps for executive stakeholders and technical teams, as appropriate
  • Effectively communicate customer’s enterprise needs and feature priorities to the technical team
  • Design and conduct end-user research to identify user stories and determine Minimum Viable Product (MVP) this can include models, personas, and other work products consumable by the technical team
  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative data collection, including direct observation, visual ethnography, key leadership engagement, in-depth interviewing, group or focus group interviewing, surveying, secondary source research, and mixed-method approaches
  • Conduct secondary research by leveraging policy documents, reports, SOPs to establish baseline understandings of the customer’s technology, data, and regulatory environment
  • Document current/desired state and risks to ensure strong cross-team understanding and alignment of business strategy and objectives to technology solutions
  • Ensure technical requirements align with customer, stakeholder, and end-user priorities to meet enterprise’s objectives which may include feature definition, pro and con identification, understanding and tracking dependencies, and understanding the value associated with features/enhancements
  • Work closely with the technical team by participating in standups, iteration planning sessions, product demos and retrospectives
  • Synthesis and analyze qualitative/quantitative data in order to provide recommendations on engagement interventions
  • Leverage user-centered research write reports, produce PowerPoints, create low-fidelity mock-ups or other audience-specific artifacts and create engaging and compelling visual stories
  • Plan, execute, interpret, and assist in socializing research findings with GTRI Portfolio Owner and Executive Leaders
  • Build actionable insights to inform engagement strategies and/or product development

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Degree in Public Health, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Industrial Design, Graphic Design or equivalent
  • 3-5 years of industry experience, working on a UX Research, experience or service design, or product teams
  • Experience creating high-fidelity prototypes

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active Secret Clearance
  • Master of Public Health, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Industrial Design, Graphic Design or equivalent
  • Mastery of Adobe Creative Suite, Flash, InDesign, Illustrator, and/or Photoshop

Education and Length of Experience

This position vacancy is an open-rank announcement. The final job offer will be dependent on candidate qualifications in alignment with Research Faculty Extension Professional ranks as outlined in section 3.2.1 of the Georgia Tech Faculty Handbook

  • 2 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Industrial Design, Graphic Design or equivalent.
  • 0 years of related experience with a Masters’ degree in Public Health, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Industrial Design, Graphic Design or equivalent.

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be U.S. Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
