Project/Unit Description

The Infrared Countermeasures (IRCM) Branch specializes in the modeling, simulation, and analysis of Infrared (IR) based threat encounters, target tracking, and IR countermeasures for the Department of Defense (DoD). The Algorithms and Analysis (A&A) Engineer position is tasked with technical oversight over IRCM research and researchers supporting defense related projects. The A&A Engineer will provide thought leadership in the field of aircraft survivability and engage with potential and existing sponsors on related efforts.

The IRCM branch is part of the Electronic Warfare Modeling and Analysis Division (EWMAD) inside of GTRI’s Electro-Optical Systems Lab (EOSL). EWMAD performs modeling, simulation, and analysis in support of Electromagnetic Warfare (EW), Electro-Optical Countermeasures, physics-based phenomenon, and Missile Warning Systems, including aircraft self-protection, EO/IR and RF countermeasures, scene generation, laser warning, scattering, propagation and turbulence, and EO/IR and RF signature modeling.

Job Purpose

Responsible for the development and support of state-of-the-art algorithms involving to data fusion, sensor fusion, machine learning, manned/unmanned avionics improvement programs, and genetic programming. Algorithm engineering focuses on the design, analysis, software/hardware implementation, optimization, profiling and experimental evaluation of computer algorithms, bridging the gap between algorithm theory and practical applications of algorithms in software engineering. Statistical analysis of multi-modal and time-varying data to characterize and quantify system qualities and deficiencies, resulting in recommendations and development of improvements

Key Responsibilities

  • Design data cleaning and analysis strategies, proposing new tools and modifications to existing paradigms.
  • Design and execute algorithm tests, providing oversight to others.
  • Lead algorithm design discussions for entire studies.
  • Architect overall algorithms with detailed system and integration considerations.
  • Lead technical report execution and provide oversight to others.
  • Lead discussions with sponsors for studies.
  • Serve as technical lead for small projects at customer sites, providing guidance to others.
  • Lead technical execution and writing for sections of journal articles and conference presentations, and literature searches for finding new avenues of thought and bodies of work to explore.
  • Serve as mentor or leader to students, including co-ops, GRAs and others through Institute programs.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership for IR related modeling and simulation research
  • Train and mentor branch members including research faculty, undergraduate, and graduate students to develop expertise in IR and electro-optical applications, including facilitating publication of novel research activities, professional development and training opportunities
  • Contribute to business development activities showcasing GTRI's IRCM related capabilities
  • Author and contribute to proposals and white papers for sustained growth of EO/IR business areas
  • Represent the institute, division, and laboratory as a subject matter expert at consortiums, symposiums, and expositions
  • Ensure that all technical work is performed and documented to organizational and DoD standards based on project requirements
  • Develop physics-based models including EO/IR signals, sensors, systems, platform, threats, atmospheric phenomena, terrains, and scenes
  • Run simulations and algorithm optimizations
  • Curate data and write automation scripts
  • Write and perform software tests supporting software verification and document outcomes
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • A Master's or Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or a related technical discipline
  • Experience with Linux and open-source tools
  • Experience with one or more programming languages used in modeling, simulation, and analysis
  • Developing, running, and conducting analysis from physics level models of threat systems and blue self-protection systems
  • At least seven years of experience related to the design, employment, or test of IR, EO, and/or RF systems in national defense scenarios

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active Secret Clearance
  • A proven track record in engaging current and potential sponsors for contract development, including writing competitive proposals and white papers
  • Experience in modeling and simulation, optimization, and testing of EO/IR aircraft survivability and sensing equipment, including missile warning systems, IR search and track systems, and countermeasures including expendables and laser countermeasures
  • Detailed knowledge of and experience using industry and/or government standard IR M&S tools including TMAP, MOSAIC, MODTRAN, FLITES, etc
  • Expertise in IR surface-to-air and air-to-air threat systems
  • Experience leading technical teams related to EO/IR modeling and simulation or software development
  • Experience with modeling, simulation, and analysis of RF systems
