Project/Unit Description

GTRI’s Signals and Systems Division (SASD) in the Advanced Concepts Laboratory (ACL) seeks qualified candidates for a Model-Based Systems Engineer within the Operations Research Branch (ORB). This Research Faculty position involves the use of Cameo Systems Modeler and related tools to design, document, and verify complex systems of systems and to develop cutting-edge interfaces between Cameo and GTRI’s in-house modeling and simulation tool suites.

SASD consists of a staff of research professionals who provide expertise that spans the full breadth of Modeling, Simulation and Analysis and Model-Based Systems Engineering of current and future advanced systems at all levels of classification. SASD specializes in being a trusted partner of the Department of Defense and offers impartial research for high-impact technical analysis. Core competencies include:
• Engineering through Mission-level Modeling and Simulation
• Operational Analysis
• Model-based Systems Engineering
• Computer Science
SASD’s research portfolio focuses on next-generation aerospace technology analysis and innovation, including RF/EO/IR sensor physics, signal processing algorithms and techniques, electronic warfare, effects-based modeling and simulation, verification and validation, advanced threat analysis, and operations research/developmental planning. Collaboration across GTRI extends these core capabilities to additional application domains.

This junior level Model-Based Systems Engineering position involves blending traditional systems engineering processes, such as functional decomposition, requirements definition, architecture development and analysis, and decision making support, with novel software engineering methods and modeling and simulation environments. The successful candidate for this position has a firm grasp of systems engineering concepts and the coding background to execute them using modern computing tools. This may include working with the Cameo API, database structures, and .json and .xml file formats to manipulate data. The successful candidate will balance project commitments to meet team goals, working with sponsors, engineers, and GTRI management. They will also be mentored to develop skills in managing subtasks, presenting their work to external stakeholders, and engaging sponsors to identify potential opportunities and contribute to proposals.

Job Purpose

The Model-Based Systems Engineer (MBSE) develops and executes novel system model-based approaches to define, design, analyze, and document system development. The MBSE Researcher applies MBSE tool suites to enable the use of model-based best practices in DoD acquisition and system life cycle support. This position supports stakeholders and sponsors in the application of MBSE to trade space analysis, design, acquisition, and sustainment. The MBSE executes System Engineering and MBSE processes including system definition, functional decomposition, requirements development, architectural development and analysis, design synthesis, system analysis, data modeling and architecture development, test program development, and sustainment activities. The MBSE researcher also presents technical and program management presentations to government sponsors.
