Project/Unit Description

The Applied Embedded Systems (AES) Division in the Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) is currently seeking a RF/Radar Systems Engineer. AES is predominantly focused on the research, development, testing, and deployment of embedded electronic and electromechanical systems. These systems provide our sponsors with technological solutions in the fields of Electronic Warfare (EW), command and control, communications, avionics, entertainment, health monitoring, and other applications. Many of these systems serve a national security mission by providing advanced capabilities for fulfilling multiple missions and protecting against a variety of adversarial threat types. The RF/Radar Systems Engineer selected for this position will design, develop, field, and support RF solutions for these and other complex systems.

Job Purpose

RF/Radar Systems Engineers work with a team to perform advanced system and algorithm development using established systems engineering approaches. Based on detailed trade studies and requirements analyses, radar systems engineers develop solutions to satisfy system requirements and perform functions related to all aspects of radar system design.  These functions include the development of the complete architectural design of radar systems, investigation and development of new algorithms to advance key sensor capabilities by leveraging signal processing techniques and novel waveform development, development of detailed simulations of algorithms and systems for design verification or to facilitate operational software development, the design of sensor modes that maximize sensor performance, the collection and analysis of data from laboratory or flight tests, and formal verification that the final design solution meet all system requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducts detailed RF subsystem and system design studies, testing plans, and analysis of requirements into detailed performance design criteria in conjunction with the technical lead and direct sponsor engagement
  • Design and build templates to assist SMEs in providing critical system information
  • Conduct product or system design synthesis translating requirements into physical architectures for RF subsystems and systems of moderate complexity
  • Analyze RF subsystem and system functionality as defined by requirements
  • Define/refine internal and external interfaces for RF subsystems and systems
  • Develop technical reports and diagrams detailing design description or performance as defined by requirements

Additional Responsibilities

  • Elicit, write, and manage system requirements
  • Collaborate with dynamic and multi-disciplinary teams to build, assemble and integrate RF systems
  • Develop and execute RF and system test plans to ensure system performance meets specifications
  • Lead small teams to take RF systems from design to functional prototypes

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience developing, integrating, and testing RF hardware designs and physical RF interfaces
  • Experience designing front end RF systems, including but not limited to LNAs, filters, RF power amplifiers, LOs, and mixers
  • Experience using and designing RF up-converters and down-converters
  • Experience with RF test equipment including Spectrum and Network Analyzers
  • Experience with RF Systems Engineering
  • Understanding of radar and electronic warfare principles

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active Secret Clearance
  • Experience with military RF systems/subsystems
  • Experience working with RF systems that have operational frequencies up to at least 20 GHz
  • Experience with modeling and simulation of EW, Radar, or EW systems
  • Knowledge and/or experience with model based systems engineering

Travel Requirements

10% - 25% travel
