Job Description

The Aerospace, Transportation, and Advanced Systems (ATAS) laboratory is seeking senior-level roboticists for the Robotics and Autonomous Systems branch. Algorithm developers would focus on path planning, auctions, advanced algorithms, computer vision, and modeling and simulation for applications that include autonomous aircraft. The division supports work across many branches of the Department of Defense (DoD), including the Air Force, Navy, Army, Marine Corps, and Office of the Secretary of Defense. Key products include physics-based modeling and simulation tools, system analyses, and physical aircraft systems.

Job Duties

Tasks will include software design and development of robotics control algorithms, following a standardized build process, configuration management, simulations, and quality assurance. Duties will encompass research as well as the development and integration of algorithms for robotics applications. The position will involve rapid prototyping and field testing, generation of research reports, publications, proposals, and briefs to customers requiring excellent written and verbal communication skills. The position also requires technical leadership of research projects or project subtasks and coordination across research groups at GTRI.

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist II

  • A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or a related field of study and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or a related field of study and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or a related field of study.

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist

  • A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or a related field of study and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or a related field of study and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or a related field of study and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • 5 or more years of experience performing basic or applied research and development in robotic algorithms or dynamical systems control, with demonstrated experience in integrating and deploying these algorithms for on robots in real-world environments
  • 2 or more years of experience in managing researchers on sponsored research programs
  • Excellent knowledge of C++, Python, ROS, and Linux
  • Hands-on experience with state-of-the-art algorithms on real-world mobile robot systems, including field test experimentation

Preferred Qualifications

  • A strong publication history demonstrating the ability to perform independent research is a plus.
  • Experience with multi-robot collaboration, swarming control algorithms, path planning, guidance, navigation, and task allocation on aerial robots is a plus
  • Proven research experience in at least one of these areas is desirable:
    • Multi-robot collaboration algorithm development
    • Behavior-based robotics
    • Path planning and navigation
    • Optimal control and estimation
