Project/Unit Description

The Sensors & Electromagnetic Applications Laboratory (SEAL) of the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) is seeking engineers and scientists who have a strong background in multiple aspects of phased array radar systems and have significant experience in the development of modern tracking and sensor fusion algorithms. As a researcher in the Air & Missile Defense Division (AMDD), candidates will work on a variety of projects supporting both US Army and Missile Defense Agency (MDA) radars. At GTRI, candidates have an excellent opportunity to grow technically and to support program management and business development activities as their careers evolve.

Job Purpose

RF/Radar Systems Engineers work with a team to perform advanced system and algorithm development using established systems engineering approaches. Based on detailed trade studies and requirements analyses, radar systems engineers develop solutions to satisfy system requirements and perform functions related to all aspects of radar system design.  These functions include the development of the complete architectural design of radar systems, investigation and development of new algorithms to advance key sensor capabilities by leveraging signal processing techniques and novel waveform development, development of detailed simulations of algorithms and systems for design verification or to facilitate operational software development, the design of sensor modes that maximize sensor performance, the collection and analysis of data from laboratory or flight tests, and formal verification that the final design solution meet all system requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop requirements and direct others to perform design and theory research and lab testing tasks as task lead
  • Mentor others in developing methods and expertise in broad areas of design, theory, and testing as task lead
  • Document work of design, theory, and test in written and presentation form as team lead. Coordinate documentation inputs from team
  • Primary lead on the development of whitepapers and proposals in research areas of expertise
  • Primary lead on sponsors and potential sponsors engagement
  • Primary author of entire technical reports/presentations of projects, journal articles, and conference presentations

Additional Responsibilities

  • Performing system engineering tasks to include modeling and simulation, performance prediction, and algorithm development.
  • Developing state-of-the-art target tracking and track fusion algorithms.
  • Integration of tracking functions with command & control, battle management, and communication systems.
  • Briefing sponsors on a regular basis.
  • Documenting research in briefings, papers, and reports.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Work experience in radar system engineering and target tracking.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active Secret Clearance
  • Work experience in radar system engineering and target tracking applied directly to ballistic missile defense.

  • 9 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Aerospace Engineering or related field.
  • 7 years of related experience with a Masters’ degree in Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Aerospace Engineering or related field.
  • 4 years of related experience with a Ph.D. in Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Aerospace Engineering or related field.

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be U.S. Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
