Job Description

The Hardware Engineer with an Embedded Open Architectures focus in the Open Systems Development Branch (OSDB) will develop hardware for opens systems technologies as well as contribute to the development of an open standard for next-generation distributed control systems and assist with prototype efforts in support of Government and Industry sponsors. OSDB enables the Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) across industry and the Department of Defense (DoD) through modeling Open Architecture (OA) reference systems, developing open systems, and developing standards.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Develop technical specifications for MOSA based systems and related hardware
  • Support the development of MOSA based standards.
  • Perform trade studies for new hardware-oriented MOSA standards
  • Integrate and test MOSA based systems
  • Conduct briefings and presentations in support of GTRI and industry sponsors related to MOSA
  • Develop next-generation hardware and documentation for MOSA technical standards
  • Generate detailed wiring schematics, diagrams for chassis prototypes, and assist in electronic system architecture development
  • Integrate components for circuit cards and provide a schematic design of complex circuits including System on a Chip (SOCs), Multi-Gigabit high-speed serial data links, Analog to Digital Converter's (ADCs), Digital to Analog Converter's (DACs), data acquisition components, switching and linear power supplies, Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) and Static Random Access Memory (SRAM) high-speed memory interfaces, and form factors
  • Support system engineering modeling efforts for MOSA based standards, systems, and hardware
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist II

  • A Master’s degree in Aerospace, Computer, Electrical, Systems, or Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or related technical field and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in  Aerospace, Computer, Electrical, Systems, or Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or related technical field and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Aerospace, Computer, Electrical, Systems, or Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or related technical field.

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist

  • A Master’s degree in Aerospace, Computer, Electrical, Systems, or Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or related technical field and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Aerospace, Computer, Electrical, Systems, or Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or related technical field and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Aerospace, Computer, Electrical, Systems, or Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or related technical field and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience specifying avionics electronics system requirements
  • Complex Circuit Card Assembly (CCA) design & integration experience
  • Experience designing schematics and developing electronics specifications and technical reports

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with design, integration, and testing of electronic systems
  • Experience developing, integrating, or testing airborne and/or rugged military system computers
  • Experience developing, integrating, or testing electronic warfare systems
  • Experience working with OpenVPX based systems
  • Experience integrating Ethernet-based systems
  • Experience with developing electronics standards and/or publications
  • Experience developing MOSA standards such as Hardware Open Systems Technologies, Future Airborne Capability Environment (FACE), Open Mission Systems/Universal Command and Control Interface (OMS/UCI), VITA 65, VITA 49, MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-704, etc
  • Active SECRET security clearance
