The Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) in Smyrna, GA is seeking an RF Systems Researcher who has an interest in intellectually challenging and rewarding work. This opportunity is with our Sensors and Electromagnetic Applications Laboratory (SEAL). SEAL projects focus on developing hardware for a wide range of Department of Defense applications which primarily include radar, electronic warfare, and embedded signal processing but often span into communication systems, surveillance systems, and other remote sensing applications. SEAL is seeking a highly-motivated RF system design engineer whose responsibilities will include RF component design and selection, RF system analysis and architecture, RF component/system simulation, laboratory and field testing, and system integration. The ideal candidate loves RF hardware, is interested in the integration of RF hardware into larger systems, and has excellent communication and leadership skills.

Job Duties

  • Perform RF system design and architecture
  • Perform RF modeling and simulation
  • Capture schematics and design RF circuit board layouts
  • Select and design RF components including amplifiers, mixers, filters, modulators/demodulators, oscillators, phase and amplitude control, couplers/hybrids/dividers, switches, limiters, beam-formers, isolators, etc.
  • Perform Receiver/Transmitter design
  • Perform frequency planning and design for Up/Don converters
  • Perform RF packaging and thermal management

10% - 25% travel

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist II

  • A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related field of study and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related field of study and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related field of study.

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist

  • A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related field of study and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related field of study and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related field of study and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidates currently enrolled in an accredited Master's or Doctoral degree program relevant to this position will be considered
  • At least 5 years of relevant full-time work experience (this can include internships) related to RF system design and architecture, RF modeling and simulation, RF testing, or similar RF-centric subject
  • The successful candidate will also take an interest in how the RF subsystem fits into the larger system as a whole. Therefore, the successful candidate will be comfortable interfacing with engineers in other disciplines and have an interest in related fields such as firmware/software development, embedded systems, mechanical and thermal engineering, signal processing, antenna design, and/or system engineering.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 10 years of full-time work experience with a focus on at least one of the interest areas outlined above
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills
  • Experience and proficiency with leading small teams
  • Hobbies or extracurricular activities that contribute to the applicant's technical ability

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.
