Project/Unit Description

The Applied Systems Laboratory (ASL) Project Management, Quality and Test, Division (PMQTD) conducts research on missile systems, military aircraft and systems, specializing in avionics, electronic warfare, autonomy, missile systems and tactical communications/datalink systems. The team's engineering roles include Applied Systems Engineering, Datalink Engineering, Embedded Software, Enterprise Software and Test Engineering. This position would support these efforts as a Software Tools Branch Head. This is a full-time research position which reports to the Program Management, Quality, Test and Tools Division Chief.

Job Purpose

Lead multiple sponsored research projects. Manage Branch (7-15 FTE) administrative activities including hiring, appraisals and sponsored project success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Recognized SME in technical domain. Lead and/or contribute to white papers and proposals.
  • Seek out and respond to opportunities for new research.
  • Support presentations and travel to support new business development.
  • Ensure that the branch is continuing to pursue new and novel research efforts through judicious use of internal R&D funding.
  • Lead branch hiring activities including development of position vacancy announcements, resume reviews, interviews and onboarding
  • Determine branch hiring needs.
  • Lead role on manpower planning for branch personnel.
  • Conduct staff appraisals.
  • Support Monthly Project Status Review meetings.
  • Coordinate with division leadership as required.
  • Lead branch hiring activities including development of position vacancy announcements, resume reviews, interviews and onboarding
  • Determine branch hiring needs.
  • Lead role on manpower planning for branch personnel.
  • Conduct staff appraisals.
  • Support Monthly Project Status Review meetings. Coordinate with division leadership as required.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Develop / design software requirements for existing and future products.
  • Implement software designs and requirements into current and future products.
  • Report development status and results to Project Director.
  • Regularly work with customers, users, and team members during product life cycle to facilitate a quality product.
  • Comply with documented software processes.
  • Provide engineering support for developed products.
  • Supervise daily development activities.
  • Develop/Design Data Analysis Tools in support of ASL Sponsored Programs.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Excellent skills and practice in programming with one or more software languages; Python, C#, C++.
    Debugging skills and practice in the use of debugging tools.
  • Extensive Experience in modeling and simulation.
  • Extensive Experience with AR/VR and LVC Training Systems.
  • Very good communication skills.
  • Experience with Agile Software Development, Continuous integration/Deployment Processes, and/or Test-Driven Development.
  • Adept at customer interface, including international customers.
  • Effective communicator, both verbal and written.
  • Strong presentation skills.
  • Skilled in use of Jira, Confluence and GitLab.
  • Experience leading business development activities including proposal development.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active Secret Clearance.
  •  Experience in management roles.
  • Experience with MIL-STD-1553.
  • Experience with TCP/IP.
  • AR/VR Development.
  • LVC Training Systems.
  • Experience writing white papers and proposals.
  • Experience with program schedule development and resource planning.
  • Experience with risk management process.
  • Experience authoring and delivering briefings to technical and non-technical audiences.

Travel Requirements

  • <10% travel.

Education and Length of Experience

This position vacancy is an open-rank announcement. The final job offer will be dependent on candidate qualifications in alignment with Research Faculty Extension Professional ranks as outlined in section 3.2.1 of the Georgia Tech Faculty Handbook

  • 9-14 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Software Engineering.
  • 7-12 years of related experience with a Masters’ degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Software Engineering.
  • 4-9 years of related experience with a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Software Engineering.

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be U.S. Citizens.

Clearance Type Required
