Job Description

GTRI’s Cooperative Education (“co-op”) program offers you extensive opportunities to participate in diverse scientific and technological endeavors, use state-of-the-art equipment and rapidly improve your technical and leadership skills. The program allows you to alternate three semesters of full-time work at GTRI with semesters of full-time school.

The Applied Systems Laboratory (ASL) is currently seeking co-ops in the Autonomy Technology Transition Division (ATTD) for the Fall 2026 Semester.

ATTD conducts research supporting sponsors across the Department of Defense and focuses on autonomous uncrewed aircraft programs. Expertise includes autonomous systems, systems engineering, avionics engineering, embedded software development, robotics, algorithim development, test and evaluation, and hardware- and software-in-the-loop development and test environments and laboratories.

The student will work under the guidance of GTRI researchers performing one or more of the following activities supporting research on Autonomous UAS platforms:

  • Embedded Software Development
  • Windows and/or Linux Software Programming
  • Data Analysis
  • C++, Rust, and/or Python Programming
  • Vehicle and Sensor Control, Task Allocation, Perception, and/or Tracking Algorithm Development
  • Test Automation
  • Software Test and Verification
  • Systems Engineering

Required Minimum Qualifications

Co-op

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Robotics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent engineering degree.
  • 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA
  • Must be eligible to be approved by your college/university to participate in a co-op program and register for co-op credit with your university during work terms
  • Must be able to complete at least three full-time co-op terms (alternating three terms of full-time work at GTRI with semesters of full-time school) prior to graduation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with one more programming language.
  • Experience with Python.
  • Familiarity with Configuration Management and Collaborative tools.
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical ideas to a non-technical audience.
  • Strong math skills and ability to learn complex engineering concepts.

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
