Project/Unit Description

Self-Protection Systems (SPS) Branch is part of the Electromagnetic Warfare and Survivability Modeling and Simulation (EWSMS) Division under GTRI’s Electro-Optical Systems Lab (EOSL). SPS conducts analysis of system-level self-protection capabilities, including high fidelity modeling of threat capabilities as well as prediction of flare, jammer, and other countermeasure performance

The EWSMS Division provides modeling, simulation, and analysis of platform and system effectiveness and survivability in one-on-one, few-on-few, and many-on-many scenarios, as well as comprehensive kill chain analysis.

Job Purpose

Lead and contribute technically to sponsored research projects. Assist Branch Head with staffing, appraisals, hiring and technical research activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Working alongside of the SPS Branch Head, the Associate Branch Head will:
    • Develop physics-based models of EO/IR and RF systems and countermeasures to evaluate and optimize their effectiveness in operational scenarios
    • Oversee and manage branch budgets, resources, and compliance with institute policies and procedures
    • Oversee and manage sponsored research in the branch to ensure execution of programs based on sponsor requirements
    • Support branch operations and coordinate across branches within the division and other laboratories of GTRI
    • Establish, maintain, and evolve the strategic vision and execution plan for the branch to enhance sponsored project portfolios and technical capabilities
    • Train and mentor branch members, including research faculty, undergraduate, and graduate students in the development and sustainment of computing resources to support modeling, simulation, and analysis research
    • Oversee, author, and contribute to proposals and white papers for sustained growth of sponsored research business areas
    • Conduct administrative actions including the recruitment, hiring, performance appraisals, and review of employee time sheets
    • Collaborate with project team members and project sponsors to specify technical requirements, schedules, and program risk analysis
    • Provide administrative support to Branch Chief, Self-Protection Systems (SPS)
    • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related technical discipline
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience related to developing, running, and troubleshooting modeling and simulation tools in a Linux HPC environment
  • Experience leading high-fidelity RF & IR countermeasure studies for advanced platforms
  • Technical expertise related to RF EW engagements
  • Software development and software configuration management experience in a diverse set of tools and languages such as Python, C++, Fortran, and/or, Bash, as well as related tools such as Git
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active TS/SCI Clearance
  • A Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related technical discipline
  • Experience building validated toolchains for modeling of RF EW systems, expendables, and radar threats
  • Experience integrating EW engagements utilizing enterprise mission modeling tools
  • Experience with research projects related to active protection systems
  • A proven track record of engagement with current and potential SPS sponsors
  • Detailed knowledge of and experience useing industry standard M&S tools including GTSIMS, ESAMS, TMAP, MOSAIC, ITASE, MODTRAN, AFSIM, Flights, and Benchmark
  • Expertise in IR and RF surface-to-air and air-to-air threat systems and kill chains
  • Experience leading small to mid-sized teams of research engineers and technical staff
