Project/Unit Description

The Sensors and Electromagnetic Application Laboratory (SEAL) is seeking an Associate Lab Director focused on program execution and business development. SEAL focuses on advanced radar, electronic warfare and associated systems. The portfolio of work has expanded greatly in recent years to include large radar and EW prototype development efforts, which in turn have increased the need for project oversight, facility/personnel planning, and strategic sponsor engagement.

Job Purpose

The Associate Lab Director assists the Lab Director in all aspects of the direction and operation of the Laboratory.  The Associate Lab Director is primarily responsible for the ongoing operations of the lab, including oversight of budgets, projects, and resources.  The Associate Lab Director also provides oversight for the administrative functions of the Lab, personnel matters within the Lab, compliance to policies and procedures, and provides the Lab interface to major GTRI support units, including Research Security, Accounting and Finance, Talent Management, and Sponsored Project Support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure execution to budget targets and compliance to policies.
  • Oversee Lab facilities, including facilities improvements decisions, space usage decisions, and overhead budgets.
  • Develop operational plans and other Lab-level plans and documents.
  • Act as a Surrogate for the Laboratory Director for meetings and other Laboratory business.
  • Contribute to hiring decisions and assist with the hiring process. 
  • Sustain Lab’s research enterprise; Identify new funding initiatives and opportunities; Cultivate and create strategic alliances with potential external sponsors.
  • Mentor lab research staff.
  • Facilitate cross-lab solutions to operational issues both through participation in special working groups and in an ad hoc manner.
  • Develop strategies for recruiting and retention.
  • Promote Lab’s mission and capabilities to government and industry research sponsors, academic colleagues and peers, and government officials and policymakers.
  • Assist and advise researchers with proposal development and submission as funding opportunities arise.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Provide project management leadership to multiple project directors and their project teams (typically ten to twenty-five member teams of multi-disciplinary engineers and scientists) to achieve project objectives and milestones and shall ensure that resources are properly allocated across and between the projects.
  • Work alongside the PDs to assure all project management requirements are met and provide project management guidance to the PDs concerning processes and procedures that would be beneficial to each project.
  • Lead strategic captures of contract vehicles and prototyping programs from initial business development through contract award.  This includes establishing and executing contract vehicles, often serving as the contract/program manager or GTRI Level 1 PD in the execution of the contract vehicles they manage.
  • Manage large interdisciplinary teams towards a common goal of on-time delivery of a winning proposal in a limited amount of time.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in DoD related R&D and project management.
  • Knowledge of GTRI based information systems (like Webwise).
  • Recent Tier 5 background investigation and experience working special security program.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active TS/SCI Clearance.
  • Master’s or PhD.
  • 20+ years of experience in DoD related R&D and project management.

Travel Requirements

10% - 25% travel

Education and Length of Experience

This position vacancy is an open-rank announcement. The final job offer will be dependent on candidate qualifications in alignment with Research Faculty Extension Professional ranks as outlined in section 3.2.1 of the Georgia Tech Faculty Handbook

  • 14 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related field.
  • 12 years of related experience with a Masters’ degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related field.
  • 9 years of related experience with a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related field.

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be U.S. Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
