GTRI is searching for a scientist to serve as Branch Head for the Quantum Devices Branch of the Quantum Systems Division (QSD) within CIPHER Lab. QSD has approximately 40 full time researchers with expertise in physics and related engineering and science disciplines. QSD currently conducts research in four basic areas: (1) feasibility and resource requirements of quantum computing applications; (2) experimental implementations of quantum computing, particularly with trapped ions; (3) quantum device development including vapor cell sensors, atomic clocks, mass spec, and nanofabrication; and (4) energy storage technology, assessments, and model-based systems engineering of supply chains and built environments. QSD researchers frequently contribute to projects in other GTRI labs and CIPHER divisions involving research in topics including artificial intelligence and machine learning, communications, biophysics, security, and optics. The research group is actively involved in conferences, has ongoing university, industry, and national laboratory collaborations, and has a growing list of publications in the quantum sciences field.
The responsibilities of the Quantum Devices Branch Head are primarily in management duties associated with approximately nine branch scientists and on actively performing research programs. Successful execution in this position requires a thorough understanding of the technologies underpinning QSD’s research and their ultimate applicability to end users, as well as an appreciation of related technical fields in which the division can grow. The successful candidate will also have experience in business development and program management. The position is based in Atlanta, GA on Georgia Tech’s main campus. Travel is required in presenting research, developing business, meeting with customers and demonstrating applied solutions.
