Project/Unit Description

Georgia Tech Research Institute’s (GTRI) Hardware Security and Trust (HST) Division seeks a highly qualified researcher with interest in leading the Hardware Research and Development (HWRD) Branch.

The HWRD Branch develops novel hardware prototypes and analysis techniques in support of hardware security experimentation. These prototypes range from custom integrated circuits, field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), and microcontrollers all the way up to complete printed circuit boards (PCB) and circuit card assemblies (CCA). The HWRD branch also supports underlying hardware crucial to research other applications such as quantum computing and sensors.

The HST Division performs research in computing hardware applications, tools, architectures, and materials to enhance the security, trust, and reliability of microelectronic devices, circuit boards, and the critical systems which rely upon them.

The HST HWRD Branch Head will work with branch engineers and program personnel as part of a cohesive team to research hardware architectures and devices, establish new prototyping and analysis capabilities, and perform advanced research at the intersection of reconfigurable technologies, novel architectures, and software/computer-aided design (CAD) frameworks.

In addition to leading research teams, Branch Heads will also be responsible for writing and winning proposals for sustained branch growth and help shape the HST Division’s strategy. They will be responsible for ensuring that the branch is continuing to pursue new and novel research efforts through judicious use of internal R&D funding.

Job Purpose

Lead multiple sponsored research projects. Manage Branch (7-15 FTE) administrative activities including hiring, appraisals and sponsored project success.

 

Additional Responsibilities

Other responsibilities include: performing branch staffing and employee appraisals; maintaining and growing hardware capabilities to support strategic growth, and maintaining adequate engineering expertise through talent acquisition and personnel professional development in order to successfully complete projects and win new efforts.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidates should have prior experience leading large project efforts and/or leading engineering teams. Prior branch-level leadership experience is not required, but will be taken into consideration.
  • Strong background in performing research in the field of reprogrammable technologies to include published journal papers, conference talks, workshops, and/or execution of sponsored fundamental research and development programs.
  • Broad experience performing hardware research, design, fabrication, or verification across the microelectronics from integrated circuits to packaged components, to full circuit card assemblies.
  • At least 5 years prior experience working with at FPGA, AISC, or PCB electronic design automation and computer-aided design tools.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active TS/SCI Clearance
  • Experience managing hardware prototyping facilities and developing the needed workflows and processes.
  • Experience with hardware/software co-design and high-level synthesis methodologies.
  • Circuit and architecture design experience (routing, logic cell design, overlays, partial reconfiguration architectures, security boundaries, etc).
  • Working with hardware-enforced trusted execution environments.

  • 0 years of related experience with a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Materials Science, Aerospace, Optical Engineering.

 

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be U.S. Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
