Job Description

The Support Services Department (SSD) within Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) is seeking a Fire and Environmental Safety Student Assistant starting Summer 2025. The Student Assistant for Fire Safety will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of personnel and facilities. The student’s responsibilities include promptly reporting any fire incidents or safety hazards to the appropriate department within 24 hours. The student will conduct regular fire safety inspections, checking the condition and accessibility of fire extinguishers, alarms, and emergency exit routes.

The student will assist with fire safety training sessions for staff and students, ensuring they are familiar with emergency protocols. Planning, executing, and evaluating fire drills will be part of the student's duties to ensure efficient evacuation procedures. Maintaining records of fire incidents, inspections, and safety drills is essential to ensure all documentation is up-to-date and accessible.

Additionally, the student will manage fire safety equipment, ensuring it is properly maintained and serviced. In an emergency, the student will help develop and disseminate communication materials, such as evacuation maps and fire safety guidelines. Collaboration with the campus public safety office and other relevant departments is crucial for updating fire safety policies and procedures.

An essential part of the student's role will be escorting fire marshals and vendors in classified spaces to ensure compliance with all security measures. This includes coordinating with the security team to authorize access and supervising activities within these sensitive areas.

Required Minimum Qualifications

Student Assistant/Research Assistant

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Must be registered for at least 6 credit hours with your university
  • 2.0 or higher cumulative GPA

Hours per Week

10–20 hours per week

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
