Job Description

The Robotics Branch at the Intelligent Sustainable Technologies Division (ISTD) of the Aerospace, Transportation and Advanced Systems Laboratory (ATAS) is looking for a Student Intern to advance NIST’s IEEE RAS P1872.1 Robot Tasking standard for Summer 2026. The standard is being actively developed and deployed on our dual robot manipulator work-cell. While the foundations have been set, many layers remain yet to be explored. This role will assist in designing test cases, developing demonstrations, and shaping the standards framework to accommodate both existing and novel applications of industrial and collaborative robotics

Required Minimum Qualifications

Intern

• Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
• 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA
• Must be registered for Full-time Internship Credit
• Experienced in C++ and/or Python
• Experience working with ROS2

Preferred Qualifications 

• Experience with MongoDB
• Familiarity with robot tasking architectures and design
• Experience with multi-robot collaboration and tasking.
• Prior work involving behavior trees
• Interest in formulating standards for use by the next-generation of industrial robotics
• Experience with rigid body transformations and their numeric representations
• Strong math skills and ability to learn complex engineering concepts
• Familiarity with Linux and open source tools
• Familiarity with configuration management tools (git in particular)
• Ability to clearly communicate technical ideas to non-technical personnel
