Job Description

GTRI’s Aerospace, Transportation, and Advanced Systems Laboratory (ATAS) seeks a Mechanical Engineering Design Student Assistant starting Fall 2025. You will work under the guidance of the project lead and lead engineer to design and implement mechanical and electrical components into an optical sensor prototype to detect airborne chemicals. Core responsibilities will include design and fabrication of physical sensor payload comprised of both mechanical and electrical design components.

Required Minimum Qualifications

Student Assistant

• Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field.
• Must be registered for at least 6 credit hours with your university during working semesters
• 3.0 or higher GPA

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience designing mechanical and electrical systems
• Evidence of independent motivation through independent projects or extracurricular leadership
• Fabrication and rapid prototyping experience
• Preferred experience in python or C++ programming languages
• Strong math skills and ability to learn complex engineering concepts
• Ability to clearly communicate and document technical ideas and concepts
