Project/Unit Description

The Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) Systems Engineering Research Division (SERD) is currently seeking a Model-Based Systems Engineer for a full-time research faculty position in the Enterprise and Model-Based DoD Acquisition Branch (MBAB). MBAB's research programs focus on supporting Department of Defense sponsors in innovating in the space of major acquisition, developing best practices in conducting Request for Proposal (RFP), proposal review, system design, program management, and other activities into digital processes.

This position supports the Department of Defense (DoD) in the effort to use model-based and data-driven processes across multiple functions to improve acquisition decisions and system life cycle support. Candidates will be responsible for using Object Management Group (OMG) Systems Modeling Language (SysML) tools (MagicDraw, Cameo Systems Modeler, Enterprise Architect, Rational Rhapsody, etc.) to author SysML and UAF models.

The Systems Engineering Research Division’s (SERD) primary location is in Smyrna, GA (15 miles northwest of Atlanta) but has researchers located at various GTRI field offices across the country. GTRI field offices provide the opportunity for a physical presence close to our sponsors, maintaining the ability to leverage the researcher base primarily located in the Atlanta metropolitan area. SERD offers a hybrid work environment where employees are in the office 3 days a week with an option to work remotely up to 2 days a week, with coordination and approval from their supervisor and depending on project requirements. For this position, the primary location is Smyrna, GA but candidates interested in being stationed at any of the following GTRI field office locations will also be considered:

• Aberdeen, MD
• Colorado Springs, CO
• Dayton, OH
• Huntsville, AL
• Patuxent River, MD
• Quantico, VA
• Warner Robins, GA
• Washington, DC

Additionally, this position will consider researchers being positioned at the following cities with a growing sponsor base:

• Detroit, MI
• San Antonio, TX

Job Purpose

  • Lead task teams in the authoring of UAF models capturing stakeholder needs and resulting enterprise architectures, SysML models capturing system requirements and design, and data models capturing system data requirements and design
  • Direct sponsor engagement and facilitate product or system requirements gathering and analysis
  • Verify systems engineering product life-cycle including definition, requirements analysis, synthesis, systems analysis and implementation
  • Conduct product or system design synthesis translating requirements into physical architectures for systems of moderate complexity
  • Develop technical reports and diagrams detailing product or system attributes in a SysML model
  • Implement approaches that foster reusability of existing model expressions

Additional Responsibilities

  • Apply Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tool suites to enable the use of model-based best practices in DoD acquisition and system life cycle support
  • Manage sponsored research projects and project execution by tracking budget, schedule, and progress
  • Contribute to MBSE business development by supporting development of white papers, proposals, and proposing new research areas
  • Collaborate with sponsors and other key stakeholders to derive tasks based on sponsor needs and requirements
