Project/Unit Description

The Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) Aerospace, Transportation and Advanced Systems (ATAS) lab has opportunities for a Software Engineer in support of the DoD test/training range research and development. Responsibilities of this position include engineering support for integration, maintenance, and operation of the system, support and maintenance of DoD systems, customer support and troubleshooting, as well as travel and support of Large Force Exercises across Europe.

The DoD Live Mission Operations Capability (LMOC) program supports Air Force Training ranges and provides secure technology solutions to enable training. This position will be immersed in the Air Force training mission and have the opportunity to frequently interface with uniformed service members and DoD Civilians, and work closely with system end-users to ensure implementations meet their operational needs, and to help identify future system requirements.

This position will be in person at the Multinational Aircrew Electronic Warfare Tactics Facility Polygone in Bann, Germany upon contract award and will report to the GTRI Phoenix Field Office.

Job Purpose

The Systems Engineer oversees and coordinates the work of technical teams on systems projects, ensuring the successful design, implementation, operation, and technical management of those projects. Taking a holistic approach to systems engineering, the Systems Engineer ensures that all aspects of a system project are considered and addressed. The Systems Engineer works closely with stakeholders to understand their needs and then develops and documents technical requirements that meet those needs. The Systems Engineer leads the design team in developing a system architecture that meets all of the requirements. After the system is designed, the Systems Engineer oversees the implementation of the system, working with the implementation team to ensure that it meets all of the requirements. Once the system is deployed, the Systems Engineer manages the technical aspects of the system, including monitoring performance, troubleshooting problems, and making improvements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage all technical aspects of product or system design and strategic architecture including directing multiple lab resources for large scale product or system deployments.
  • Manage sub-contractor resources supporting all system engineering areas (definition, requirements analysis, architecture roadmaps, synthesis, systems analysis and implementation).
  • Conduct product or system design synthesis translating requirements into physical architectures for systems of high complexity to include defining and refining internal and external interfaces.
  • Develop technical reports and diagrams detailing product or system attributes.
  • Direct teams to implement, document, and maintain the products’ architecture roadmaps, designs, procedures, standards, and metrics, as well as ensure compliance and conformity of software architecture and technology standards.
  • Compile report input from other researchers and prepare final report deliverables.
  • Serve as a resource and Subject Matter Expert (SME) for systems engineering tools and technologies

Additional Responsibilities

  • Support range instrumentation systems including telemetry, radar, tracking, and communication systems.
  • Ability to perform troubleshooting and fault isolation on hardware and software systems.
  • Support setup, execution, and teardown of range training events and exercises.
  • Support cybersecurity compliance, documentation, and system accreditation processes.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant U.S. and host-nation regulations, safety policies, and operational guidelines.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Extensive experience with hardware and software issue resolution.
  • Knowledge and experience with U.S. military training operations and Large Force Exercise execution.
  • Experience with Tactical Data Links (TDL).
  • Familiarity with mobile training systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active Secret Clearance.
  • Familiarity or experience with Live Mission Operations Capability (LMOC).
  • Familiarity or experience with Live-Virtual-Constructive (LVC) software.
  • Familiarity of DoD data exchange protocols.

Travel Requirements

  • 10% - 25% travel.
