Project/Unit Description

The Applied Systems Laboratory (ASL) Systems Integration Division (SID) supports systems integration, system design, and product development projects for the Department of Defense (DoD) systems. SID researches military systems specializing in avionics, electronic warfare, aircraft survivability, data correlation/fusion, intelligence systems, tactical communication/datalink systems, and military space. The SID team's engineering roles include Systems Engineering, Algorithm Engineering, Datalink Engineering, and Embedded Software Engineering.

Job Purpose

The Systems Engineer oversees and coordinates the work of technical teams on systems projects, ensuring the successful design, implementation, operation, and technical management of those projects. Taking a holistic approach to systems engineering, the Systems Engineer ensures that all aspects of a system project are considered and addressed. The Systems Engineer works closely with stakeholders to understand their needs and then develops and documents technical requirements that meet those needs. The Systems Engineer leads the design team in developing a system architecture that meets all of the requirements. After the system is designed, the Systems Engineer oversees the implementation of the system, working with the implementation team to ensure that it meets all of the requirements. Once the system is deployed, the Systems Engineer manages the technical aspects of the system, including monitoring performance, troubleshooting problems, and making improvements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct top-down functional analysis and translate requirements into detailed performance design criteria.
  • Design and build templates to assist Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in providing critical system information.
  • Conduct product or system design synthesis translating requirements into physical architectures for systems of low complexity to include defining and refining internal and external interfaces.
  • Contribute to and develop technical reports and diagrams detailing product or system attributes.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Create product and system definitions and conduct requirements and functional analysis for assigned integration and test activities.
  • Support system design synthesis and definition of internal and external mechanical, electrical, power, communications, and software interfaces.
  • Assist with Interface Control Document development, integration configurations, test procedures, and test reports.
  • Develop, review, and execute test cases, test plans, and System Integration and Checkout procedures to verify system and interface requirements and system performance.
  • Collect and analyze test data; identify anomalies; and support issue allocation, troubleshooting, and resolution.
  • Support vendor integration activities, baseline-promotion criteria, and requirements traceability for allocated system and interface requirements.
  • Support laboratory, integration-site, and field-test activities, including test-article configuration, instrumentation, checkout, and technical documentation.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Systems integration and test experience.
  • Experience contributing to system definition, requirements analysis, design synthesis, systems analysis, and/or implementation activities.
  • Experience developing and executing test cases, test plans, test procedures, and/or test reports against system and interface requirements.
  • Experience developing or assessing mechanical and electrical interface requirements, including packaging, loads, power, communications, connectors, and cable routing.
  • Experience supporting integration and checkout of complex electro-mechanical systems with hardware, software, and communications interfaces.
  • Ability to interpret and apply system requirements, Interface Control Documents, and configuration management artifacts.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active Secret Clearance.
  • 3+ years of relevant systems integration and test experience.
  • Experience supporting integration and test activities on a complex, multi-vendor government program.
  • Experience integrating autonomous ground vehicles, mission payloads, launcher systems, autonomy command-and-control, tactical software, or other complex DoD systems.
  • Experience supporting or authoring contract deliverables related to test plans, test procedures, or verification/validation reporting.
  • Experience working across multiple contractor teams and deconflicting competing technical priorities.
  • Familiarity with systems engineering standards and practices (e.g., MIL-STD-31000, SEMP-based programs).
  • Experience supporting baseline-promotion or baseline-acceptance processes in a multi-vendor integration environment.
  • Experience designing secure and safe system solutions.
  • Experience applying Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) practices.
  • Experience processing and analyzing test data with tools such as Python, MATLAB, or R.
